Bob (Hearts) Abishola: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Bob (Hearts) Abishola

Critics Consensus

Groundbreaking, but unfortunately grating, Bob (Hearts) Abishola undermines its own progressive premise with underwhelming humor that relies too heavily on outdated stereotypes.

If you got chuckles and awws out of Mike & Molly, cuddle up with this twist on that 2010-2016 hit.

But there's also an earnestness about Bob Hearts Abishola that makes it likable, and the writers' efforts at slowly bringing the two characters together to find common ground give these stereotypes some context.

Bob Hearts Abishola has just enough heart (no pun intended) to put it ahead of how most Chuck Lorre comedies started, including huge hits like Two and a Half Men or The Big Bang Theory.

The straining attempt at inclusion has its sweet moments, but a lot of its humor is based on unfunny tropes.

They have zero chemistry. They do not go on a date. They do not say anything funny.

The problem with the show, which is evident pretty much from the start: Abishola can do better than Bob.

Sep 23, 2019 | Full Review…

Although the jokes are broad and the studio audience laughter as loud and long as any other Lorre show, there's something quiet, simple and satisfying about "Abishola" that makes it stand out among the producer's canon

The show probably can't keep them from a relationship for too long without stretching its premise too thin, but for now, their dynamic is a refreshingly unique one for a broadcast network sitcom.

Olowofoyeku and Gardell work diligently, but they're not given much to play besides good intentions.

I'm happy to report my concerns were (mostly) unfounded due to the show's surprising level of nuance, which renders Bob Hearts Abishola nothing short of groundbreaking.

Sep 23, 2019 | Full Review…

Ostensibly, the show is an attempt to bridge cultural differences... In practice, however-and despite the participation of Nigerian-British co-creator Gina Yashere-it exoticizes its female lead and cracks easy jokes grounded in stereotypes.

There's no denying Lorre's gift for hooking an audience... Bob Hearts Abishola may be the funniest (and certainly the sweetest) pilot the man with the golden laugh track has ever produced.

The first thing you need for a comedy is some humor. Just a little humour. I watched two episodes and I could not find anything to laugh about. In addition, I hate laugh tracks. I do not need to be told when to laugh. Please someone create some good comedy like The Office, Parks and Recreation, Friends and Arrested Development.

Every writer does not deserve a pen.

This show makes a mockery of the American Descendants of Slaves community. All of the jokes are in poor taste and are racist.

A show written by a bigot. Pushes racist steretypes against black Americans. Paints us as lazy, shiftless good for nothings. The same lie weve fought for 400 plus years. One more attempt at robbing us of our humanity. The only people relating to and liking this show are other racist. CBS should be ashamed gor airing this garbage.

I wish I could.give this show negative stars, it is truly disrespectful to the cultures it strives to reflect and brings negative attitude on all black people African Americans as well as African immigrants just bad.

Horrible to showcase African immigrants perpetuating racist tropes of African Americans in a attempt to highlight differences among groups.

#ADOS are in a fight for respect and rights that are owed to us & that our forefathers fought and died for. Here comes a show that depicts us in the most negative light. Telling lies about our community. Continuing to perpetuated stereotypes that bigots have labeled us with since our ancestors kidnapping to this country. These lies and stereotypes are being used against an oppressed people who are fighting for their life. The creators/writers make fun of us and use these stereotypes as an easy way to get rich off our ongoing plight. The show is not funny at all, in fact, it is insulting. Make your money elsewhere and stop using lies and stereotypes about #ADOS to get rich. This show needs to be cancelled.
