More Critic Reviews for Godfather of Harlem Season 1 All Critics (22) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (21) | Rotten (1) [Whitaker] holds it all together, but this is definitely an ensemble piece, and it's smart, engaging television that only occasionally falters under the weight of its ambition to tell a few too many stories at once. Oct 6, 2019 | Full Review… Brian Tallerico RogerEbert.com Top Critic Anachronistic hip-hop might date the series quickly, but for now it's a rich and piquant stew. Oct 2, 2019 | Full Review… Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Top Critic Whitaker gets his first series lead role, with predictable results - all good. Sep 27, 2019 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review… Verne Gay Newsday Top Critic This unofficial prequel to "American Gangster" does play with nostalgia from the era... But its depiction of a racially divided, corrupt and often venal world rings just as true today. Oct 2, 2019 | Full Review… Lorraine Ali Los Angeles Times Top Critic Through it all, Whitaker keeps a tight rein on his performance, letting his storied intensity break through in just a few flashes. Sep 30, 2019 | Full Review… Mike Hale New York Times Top Critic Even with its ambitions, its embracing of the genre's cliches, its at-times strained credulity, and overstuffed plot lines may keep new audiences away. Sep 30, 2019 | Rating: C+ | Full Review… Tambay Obenson indieWire Top Critic It's gritty, pulpy and unpredictable and confident in a swagger that's not really trying to emulate the soft nuances of "prestige" crime dramas like Breaking Bad or The Sopranos. Oct 6, 2019 | Full Review… Malcolm Venable TV Guide In Godfather, there promises to be tragedy enough for all. Sep 30, 2019 | Full Review… Matt Roush TV Insider Godfather Of Harlem has fine performances and mostly sharp writing, making good use of the real-life historical figures that are the show's characters. Sep 30, 2019 | Full Review… Joel Keller Decider The show mostly bobs along at a level of "pretty good," and every now and then it crests higher than that. The trio of Whitaker, D'Onofrio, and Esposito are enough to make anything worth watching, and they're matched by a superb Nigél Thatch. Oct 11, 2019 | Full Review… Ned Lannamann Pajiba I'm not saying devious behaviour is to be celebrated but even in the crime world, ingenuity and creativity exist before the inevitable demise of the criminal. Nov 22, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review… Phumlani S Langa City Press (South Africa) On one level it's a good entertainment, featuring a stellar cast and fantastic production values, on another level it uses the melodrama of this genre to explore themes about race in a way you normally wouldn't get in a mere crime thriller. Pati's C Dec 04, 2019 Forest Whitaker is a genius! So glad they decided to cast him in this role. Every episode leaves you wanting more. I wish I could rewatch this show. Kenny C Dec 01, 2019 Very good TV show based on true events so realistic. Ruben S Nov 29, 2019 Whitaker nailed it! This was very well written and the pace is great. It does not bore you one bit. Looking forward to season 2. Homerun entertainment! Philip G Nov 20, 2019 Great series with the great Forest Whitaker and a strong supporting cast. Particularly interesting to see the interplay of Bumpy Johnson with Malcolm X, Adam Clayton Powell and the Italian Mob figures. Also a strong soundtrack. Paul M Nov 17, 2019 Compelling, sad and rings so true. StressFree20 D Nov 11, 2019 One of the greatest in a long time... Exceptionally good...?????????? George A Nov 11, 2019 Good damn show. Love it already! Marcus H Nov 06, 2019 This is probably the best show on TV right now. Forrest just delivers in the way you would expect him to. This is a great mob tv show that I cannot wait to see each week. It is well-acted on all fronts and it really depicts New York in the 60's. The set design and fashion of the characters are so on point. From the crime families to the racism to the rise of the Nation of Islam it is just fantastic. They address the impact of drugs on the inner cities and not from an apologetic perspective. It feels real. I can't wait to see more episodes. Stacy J Oct 23, 2019 Good show but who ever did the set design for episode 4 needs a history lesson. In the boxing gym scene there is the South African flag that only came into use in 1994. The show is set in 1960 Geraint H See all Audience reviews News & Features 150 Erotic Movies Ranked worst to best! 2019's Most Anticipated 63 movies coming up this year 200 Essential Movies Chosen by RT staff!
