Prodigal Son: Season 1 (2019)

Season 1
Prodigal Son

Critics Consensus

Though it shows promise, Prodigal Son sidelines a spectacular Michael Sheen in favor of a more pedestrian procedural that often drifts too deeply into the grotesque.

Critic Reviews for Prodigal Son Season 1

All Critics (21) | Top Critics (7)

Some tonal tweaks could turn this eagerly outrageous crime drama into something enjoyably out there, but for now, it's just the craziest "Silence of the Lambs" knock-off yet.

Prodigal Son is more than several cuts below that Oscar-lauded classic. Still, it's better than chopped liver, of which Dr. Martin Whitly has shown he knows a thing or two.

Prodigal Son is taking important steps forward without sacrificing any excitement or drama in the process.

Sep 25, 2019 | Rating: 3.2/5 | Full Review…

Dark drama has OK plot, weak characters, lots of violence.

Oct 2, 2019 | Rating: 2/5 | Full Review…

Sheen seems to be having an especially good time in his deliciously menacing role.

Sep 27, 2019 | Full Review…

Thanks in large part to the cast and some slightly obvious but well-executed twists, the pilot was a helluva fun ride. The question, of course, is how Prodigal Son will maintain this momentum over the course of the season.

Sep 25, 2019 | Full Review…

Michael Sheen is dancing with light feet in this role, clearly having a blast playing a serial killer who is at once a duplicitous menace and a charming conversationalist.

Sep 20, 2019 | Rating: 85/100 | Full Review…

The pilot works as a neat little intro, perhaps a little too neat, and certainly too tidy, to the family and procedural dynamic.

Sep 16, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

It's a standard-issue, formulaic drama that never quite kicks into gear, and I can't help but think that Prodigal Son could have been much more riveting, given its subject matter and the presence of [Michael] Sheen.

Sep 20, 2019 | Full Review…

Prodigal Son is, at the outset, a dark show that doesn't take its darkness seriously enough.

Sep 20, 2019 | Full Review…

Prodigal Son is a sinister, slick, and sometimes silly serial killer saga punctuated by a fun Michael Sheen performance.

Sep 24, 2019 | Rating: 7.8/10 | Full Review…

Sometimes a series tries to be too many things at once, but even though Prodigal Son Season 1 Episode 1 juggled a lot, the series may pull it off. It's dark, twisted, horrific, and fun.

This show is different, which makes it refreshing. I look forward to watching it.

Occasionally falls into the genre's conventional tropes, but switches it up just enough to feel fresh and new. With electrifying performances from Michael Sheen and Bellamy Young, this is a great recommendation for people who like classic procedurals with a twist.

I didn't expect to like this show but first viewing kept me glued to my seat. Complex characters and very good acting. Only knock is over the top level of grotesque murder methods. Would not recommend binging or the viewer is likely to be the one having nightmares.

Great storyline wish this show was on cable or a streaming service. Love the story of a serial killer son who becomes a criminal profiler, I like there's a story line that continues through each episode. I feel if this show was on FX, A&E or Netflix the show can be a lot more gritty, like Dexter or Breaking Bad, I feel that being on network TV hold it back, Prodigal Son feels like it's forced to be PG 13, but really want to be Rated R??

    Love it! Superb job!

One of the best I've seen on TV in the past few years. The story is funny and the characters are riveting.

What a shame. I was really hoping this would be a good series. Unfortunately, it's only episode 3 and the writing has become unbearably silly. They're using storylines that were disproven in the 60s, (like LSD causing people to jump out of windows & shoot people.) The dialogue is so overly dramatic, it's impossible for the otherwise talented actors to pull off. Another good idea bites the dust.

From the WALking Dead to this. Jesus lol.. has slammed dunked his way into another must see tv hit series.

Smart, funny, wittty. Best thing on tv right now

I REALLY wanted to like this show, but Tom Payne's acting is well...ACTING. Every time he opens his mouth all I see is a memorized script instead of a fully developed character. The rest of the cast is absolutely stellar and Michael Sheen is completely captivating. The show would be so much better if it had half the writing talent of Hannibal!
