Critics Consensus

Tuca & Bertie skips right past Bojack Horseman's shadow with its chipper sensibility and madcap sight gags, bringing plenty of laughs as it addresses adulting anxiety and exalts the joys of friendship.

It's a consistent joy to watch the series bring that same richness to its characters' internal realities. Tuca and Bertie are still trying to figure things out, but the series handles their growing pains with tenderness and understanding.

Colorful and crude, the premise is as nondescript as the animation.

Bright, encouraging, and outrageous, watching "Tuca & Bertie" can feel like watching a particularly excellent Saturday morning cartoon.

Hanawalt's joyful, messy world is grounded by weird but unmistakably human performances from Haddish and Wong. This is a bright, squawking delight.

It's a bit like "Broad City" turned into a cartoon, with the same giddy undercurrent of female empowerment.

In Hanawalt's hands, you'll feel wonderfully unbalanced, then tenderly comforted.

Tuca & Bertie is clever enough to use its medium to make a great point, and an even greater show.

Tuca & Bertie provides an imaginative and hilarious exploration of growing up and flawed female friendship.

If you enjoy BoJack Horseman's nihilism and dark humor, you will definitely enjoy Tuca & Bertie's surreal take on sisterhood and how women navigate society professionally and personally.

[Lisa] Hanawalt has created a warming show that possesses all the essential elements of a joyful female camaraderie comedy, exploring insecurity and existential angst with an absurd sense of humour while also succeeding in sensitive and poignant delivery.

Audience Reviews for Tuca & Bertie: Season 1

I only knew Tuca & Bertie existed because it was trending on Twitter one day due to its cancellation, I didn't get what people were raving about so I sat down to watch it myself. You have to give the show a chance, I didn't like it at all in my first viewing, but it does get better. The characters growth, and resolutions are what kept me interested. Toward the end the pacing breaks, and some character's are a bit one dimensional, but overall I say its a good watch. I don't know if it needs a second season, but I can think of a lot of scenarios Tuca & Bertie could tackle.

This show is weird at first, but as you adjust to the pacing and silliness, you discover that it's incredibly rich and visually delightful to take in. I watched the first episode twice and then I was good to go for the rest. The humor is at times raunchy but it's also very relatable to me as a woman living in an urban environment in my 20s and 30s. There is not enough programming that speaks to the experience of women in roles other than mothers or as incidental to the men. By the end of the season, which I ended up bingeing, I was excited for more. So when it was cancelled, it was to my astonishment and enduring disappointment. So enduring, in fact, that months later I found myself googling to see if it was picked up elsewhere... which is how I ended up writing a review more than six months after I watched the series. This show is nothing like Bojack Horseman, which I also love, so if you're going in with that expectation, you'll be disappointed. It's something completely different than demands to be enjoyed on its own terms.

10/10 animation. lots of funny gags. great show starring women and relating to the experiences of women that many shows don't give
  • Nov 03, 2019
The animation in this will probably cause an aneurysm because it is that bad. The writing is the exact reason we have terrorists in the world that want to see America destroyed. The combination of the writing and animation will cause physical illness, so have a bucket handy. It is as funny as a your child dying in your arms and as enjoyable as having a gutter nail hammered into your head. Avoid this like the plague.

Annoying and hideously unfunny. How did this happen?
  • Oct 17, 2019
The show Tuca & Bertie depicts the female identity in a varying and relatable way that addresses many trending topics and their coinciding issues, such as career advancement and workplace sexual harassment. Also, to all review readers, I would note the majority (all) of negative comments thus far have been posted by men... hence the dilution of the audience score. To quote a WTUS meeting, "Get out of my space, or I'll break your face" (Bertie, 2019).

Absolutely loved it. Would definitely also let my kids watch it, if I had any to cut out on taboos. A new approach to everyday subjects for women aswell as for men.

Beyond fantastic show. While illustrating common issues in every day life amongst the working class, it also dives into mental issues people go through in a daily routine and how to handle toxic situations while keeping a comedic outlook. Unlike its similar created shows like Bojack Horseman, audience can relate more to the characters and what they deal with. It is both emotionally deep and hilarious in a perfect duality. Definitely a huge step for modern animation.
  • Oct 09, 2019
Not too bad, but the storyline quickly exposes itself as pretty narrow and repetitive.
  • Oct 09, 2019
It was okay. Animation was nice, paired with a colorful and fantastical world. Unfortunately the only likeable character was Speckles. Another annoying bit was the series acting like things such as excessive, extreme catcalling was just something that happened all the time, opening up a lot of jabs against men as a whole. I just find it pretty obnoxious and cringey when shows do this, cause it just happens so often. In conclusion, I'm sick of political agendas. They ruin shows.
